HELD IN THE HEARTLAND
(German POWs in the Midwest 1943-46)
This traveling exhibit tells
the unknown Story of German POWs
held in the Midwest Camps during World War II.
By the end of World War II some 425,000 German, Italian and Japanese prisoners
of war found themselves imprisoned in over 600 base and branch POW camps in
almost all of the United States. Roughly 372,000 German POWs held in Army
operated camps across the United States were sent out to harvest or process
crops, build roads and waterways, fell trees, roof barns and much more.
This will be a very interesting exhibit as
Hartford hosted one such POW camp.
The
FREE traveling exhibit
will be located in front of the
Hartford Public
Library
15 Franklin
Street
Hartford, MI
49057
1:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Celebrating

3:30 - 4:15 p.m.
Stories and Games
Join us and meet
Doc
Fletcher, Author

with his presentation
Canoeing and Kayaking through Michigan
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p .m.
The slide show is a photographic journey down selected
rivers from each of his two books,
Weekend Canoeing in
Michigan (2008 release) &
Michigan Rivers Less
Paddled (2009). You'll be introduced to a day trip down each
river that includes the river's "degree of difficulty", float time,
obstacles expected, and key landmarks encountered. All local canoe - kayak
livery info is included. Histories of nearby towns (with that town's
local Detroit Tiger radio affiliate) are discussed, & tales are told of a
local, old time, tavern in that town - a place to relax and relive the
day's river adventure.
Doc took his first canoe
trip in 1978 on the Pere Marquette River and, ever since then, gets back
into a canoe whenever possible. He enjoyed a rewarding 30 year career as an
account executive with the folks at Duracell, the battery company, from
1976-2006.
