According to Charles Spaulding's book,
A History Of Hartford:
the growth of the village was very slow
until about 1870
when the building of the Chicago and West Michigan
Railroad
(Pere Marquette at the time of the recording of Spaulding's book)
was an incentive to more rapid settlement.
Zoom in (when the
next window opens, put your mouse on the lower right corner of the
photo. After the orange button appears, click on it to open up full-size) on the
photo to see detail of the men's shoes, clothing and hair styles; a box car parked outside of the
window; train route map; calendar, a schedule of events, etc. Is that a printing press in
the middle of the photo? Not sure, but they probably printed
their own schedules and posters.
