Terry Bisbee, SP/4 - Letter From Vietnam 1964

14 April 64
Ton Son Nhut

Hi Mom,
Have a little time so will drop you a few lines to let you know I am fine.
Well I guess I may or will tell you I've been put in for one more medal.  I was put in for the Purple Heart last week when my machine gun blew up while firing at the V-C.  I got power burn and shrapnel in my arm and stomach, but they picked it all out in about 3 hours and I am fine now. Can't even tell it except for a few marks left.
Boy was I ever sick Sunday.  We went on a mission and one pilot was shot through the leg, then one crew chief got shot in the leg, then one crew chief got killed - all from this company.  There was 7 Americans wounded and the one died all together.  I had my ship shot up so bad it was to be sent to the States and it is too bad to be fixed, but I took someone else's ship as the Busy Bee didn't go.  Boy, will I be glad to get out of here, as it is worse every day it seems.
I get one air medal for every 25 combat missions I fly and as of now I have 200 missions, so I have 8 coming now.  But I can only wear one ribbon and some small pins on it for every other one.  But I also have a Vietnam Expeditionary medal and my Purple Heart will make 3 ribbons.
Well, I can't think of much to say, so will close for now and try and write Peggy and Gene.

Love,
Terry
