It was no joke when it was
reported that Township Clerk Daniel Lightner demonstrated his athletic
prowess by blowing out all the candles on his birthday cake with one
puff last month. Half a century ago, Lightner was a member of
this rugged Hartford high school basketball team, which won 15 games
and lost only 2 in the 1906-06 season.
From left to right, standing, are Victor Conklin,
Burrell Doolittle, Don Spaulding, Vance Row and Lightner.
Seated, left to right are Ray High, Dell Smith, Prof. Marsh and Buck
Wilkinson.
The picture was furnished by Cecle Conolly, Los
Angeles, Calif., who wrote: "In those days, there was no squad
- just a team of six men. In the game, five played and one
sat on the bench until someone got hurt or went out of the game on
fouls. This was a rugged bunch of boy." Conolly said that
Prof. Marsh was the coach, Spaulding booked the games and Smith was
the manager. Conolly said that other than Lightner, he had no
knowledge of where others in the picture are living, and suggested
that someone in Hartford might have information about them. |
