A
1936 graduate of Hartford High School, Alleyne Markillie began her
career at the old high school in the fall after graduation. Her first duty
was as secretary to Superintendent Berton W. Robinson. She supported many
others during her 42 years as Superintendent Secretary.
Dedicated,
faithful in attendance, she had a gentle spirit and soft-spoken voice that
greeted many students. Her appearance was always neat, well-kept, and
she never had a hair out of place.
She didn't
drive, but walked to and from school every day - winter, spring, and summer
.... through the snow, wind, rain.

|
After 22 more years in the business office as
Bookkeeper, Mrs. Myers retired in October 1999.
The most popular section of this website is
the
HHS Graduate Database. The graduate
names were derived from her organized records. Many aspects of the
History of Hartford would be lost without her diligent recordkeeping.
Thank you for your dedicated service to the
staff and students of Hartford High School from 1936-1999.

Mildred Toogood |
|
Mildred A. Toogood, graduated, I believe, in 1922
(note: the HHS grad database shows 1915. She is in the
1922 all-high school photo). She was my high
school English teacher in the mid-forties - a fearsome, loved educator.
When I went to Michigan State University after graduating, my English
professor asked if I had gone to Lansing Eastern High School, I asked him
why he asked. His reply was that my English usage was excellent, and that
I must have had Miss Toogood. I still have the term paper I wrote for
her. She was an institution there, and is remembered at many of our
reunions. I'm surprised I don't see more about her on the internet.
This photograph is from The
Lantern, 1944 Eastern High School Senior Yearbook.
The
Dedication, which is not clear in the photograph, reads:
"To Miss Mildred Toogood, tolerant and congenial tutor of Advanced
Composition, energetic and forceful head of the exceedingly progressive
English Department, a lady endowed with an enlightened mind whose
precepts stimulate a genuine desire for knowledge, we, the staff, dedicate
this 1944 Lantern."
