Special thanks to Peggy Barriskill Perazzo for transcribing and sharing the early history of Hartford, Michigan as recorded through the
eyes of Eli Fayette Ruggles and penned as his
Recollections of A Busy Life, circa 1904. Eli and his family left their home and
families in Ohio to settle in Hartford Michigan. If you are a
Hartford History buff or have read the other transcripts,
A History of Hartford
by Charles A. Spaulding, or
Early
History of Hartford and Lawrence by
Katherine Minshall, you'll recognize many of the names mentioned in the
Recollections of A Busy Life.
Local towns of Hartford Centre (Hartford)
Decatur, Keeler, Waterford (Watervliet), St. Joe, Kalamazoo and others are
mentioned as they forged a new life during the pioneer days of Southwest
Michigan.

Perazzo's great grandmother, Augusta Florence (Ruggles)
Sears/Wallace/Sears in Esparto, California, where she was living at
the time, from H. L. Ruggles, 142 Monroe Street, Chicago, Illinois.
Augusta's parents were Fernando C. and Leanna (Kinkle) Ruggles who
lived first in Placerville, El Dorado County, in 1849 and about a year
later in Woodland, Yolo County, after migrating from Michigan with
other family members. States and towns that our Ruggles families lived
