I admire your title "Pearls in our Past", what a lovely thought, so many happy memories of Hartford and the lovely people who were born there, grew up there and took such pride in their hometown. I also admire the webmaster for her intelligence, hard work and Love for her fellowman (woman)...also her dedicated effort to assist her classmates (class of 1966) connected so many years later. I just wanted to let you know I think this is an outstanding site. I am Jim Rhinehart and live in Midland City, Alabama. I work for Sony Corporation here. Hartford is my hometown as it is (was) most of my relatives. I saw my dad's picture along with his brothers (James W. Rhinehart) in the WW2 history section. My dad was killed test flying a helicopter. I think this is a really nice site design. I see that you are looking for more historical pictures. I'm am trying to find some as most of my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and parents were (are) from there in Hartford. If I find any, I'll send them in. Keep up the good work. Again....this is a job "Well Done".

I'm trying to gather some information and pictures for you. I'm writing this on Mothers day and after taking my mother out for lunch I started thinking. My mom is from Hartford also. She was born in Grand Rapids. Why not include women in the historical section. My Mom is 80 and she can tell you some stories. I believe she worked in an aircraft factory or made aircraft parts during WW2. As you know these women were known as "Rosie Riviters". They helped keep this country going while the men were "over there" fighting.

Marvelous idea. We really appreciate the effort that has gone into it already! We moved to Ann Arbor in 1966 and lived there until 1982 when we moved back. Have lived here since then except for traveling. Small towns have fallen on hard times. Perhaps Hartford was never as we remember it......but in our minds it will always be our town.....a good place in which to grow up.

I'm enjoying all of it so far--it brings back many memories. I remember the Thomas Farms when Dr. Thomas invited the children of Hartford to swim in his pond in the woods. My sister, Jeanne Knapp, as a teen, was one of the leaders that took us there. It was such a beautiful, natural setting and a real treat for all of us little ones. In later years, I learned that Jeanne didn't even like to swim, which was ironic! Dr. Thomas also allowed all the children to pick wildflowers for their May baskets, which was great fun.

Hello,     Just found your site. Lived there from 1944 until 1959, the year I graduated. With Bruce Dowd, Phil Friday, etc. My mom and dad were there until 1969 when my dad died and my mom moved to New Orleans.   They were Al and Lois Guerin and owned Al's Market, next to Clark's Drug store, and later Al's Cab. Have some old pictures of that if you are ever interested. My grandfather was Andy Hollenbeck and tended bar at the Main Tavern, most of that time. We lived next to the Smiths on Hillsboro Street (128). Lots of old things I remember.    Would like to suggest a page with then & now photos. That would be fun, perhaps with a link to their email addresses. Just a thought.     Anyway, have your page marked now and will continue to keep track. You have done a nice job with the site. One of my sons is into computer programming and I know how difficult a job you have. As was the case with all men 18 and older during WWII, I left Hartford for flight training in 1943 and never returned to live in Hartford. Actually, I made the Air Force a nearly 30 year career spending time in Korea and Viet Nam among others places. Will send photos of each wartime experience at a later date if you are interested. My ten years in Hartford were all important and friendships made at that time continue to this day.

I remember well moving to a new school in 7th grade was not easy, I never thought I would be at home here but I was wrong. As a child (when we lived in the country), we would do our Saturday shopping in Hartford for meat, bread and other groceries. Our big treat was going to the movie afterward. During the brief time I lived in Hartford (about four months), I established a friendship with Pat Levy and was treated so well by her family. I also got to know Jim Walker from Walker's Hardware as that seemed to be one of our regular stops. In the years to come--my relationship with Jim Walker and wife, Frances, were more of an intimate nature since I married their grandson, Gerald "Jerry" Molter. Grandpa loved to tease me and it was so nice visiting with them at their Hartford home, or at Lake Cora. We still get to Hartford to visit my former English teacher, Roy "Bud" Davis and wife, Marion. We have a special friendship that has grown over the years and I told him that I consider him and Marion as part of my family. My father, Edmund John Austin, was a 1924 graduate of Hartford High School. Later, he taught for a year at the Webster Hills School. My grandfather, Amos Orion Austin and spouse Martha Rendell, after their marriage in 1891, owned property on the Berrien/Van Buren County Line Road, between Red Arrow Highway and the Paw Paw River, where all their children were born. In my youth, Hartford was an important place as I learned the route from Kalamazoo to my grandparents home. Cousins Vernon and Erwin "Pete" Austin both currently reside in the township. Maple Hill Cemetery is the resting place for several of our family members. So even though I am not a native of Hartford, I have strong connections to the area. I have photos and documents which I would be glad to scan and share with you to use as you see fit. I appreciate the work that has been done to create a really great Website.

I remember the Hartford Fire in the 60's and my visits to Miss Manley, a neighbor, who had a marvelous large collection of photos from Hartford's history. I hope those pictures are preserved somewhere. I spent hours at her house when I was a little kid. Most of all, I remember the wonderful people of the city. I was back there last summer, while visiting my sister, Shari, who lives in Kalamazoo.

It's very nice as new format. Lots of memories. I still have relatives in Hartford. I used to go fishing with my father, Bert Dyer, at the river. In those days, we didn't lock our doors. Today raising your children in a small town is the best thing to do. It's so much more friendlier, homey, nice neighbors and friends. You know everyone and they know you. We graduated with a class of 27 students. We paid for our own senior trip with monies made through our 4 years. We are still together (some are deceased) but we remain loyal to each other. We were loyal classmates then, also. One time in a class one of our classmates got into trouble with our teacher, she slapped him, and the entire class stood up and walked out and went to study hall. We had no warning and we just did it automatically. Very strong, fond memories in Hartford.

I have read this site and it is amazing. The people who designed it and worked with the contents should be commended for their hard work. It's like going back to my childhood. My growing up years in Hartford were great. More and more people are yearning for places like Hartford to raise their families. Smaller towns are friendlier, people know you, they like you, watch over you and are loyal to their city. We didn't lock our doors back then.

At the end of the depression when it was hard for people to get on their feet, they began wandering the country looking for work. They became beggars and sometimes came to our door. My grandmother (Edith Dyer) gave them food to help them on their way. She wasn't afraid of anyone who came to our door. It's a sad society when people are so afraid but today they have no choice.

During World War II, military people were sometimes stranded in Hartford or were passing through and had no place to stay. My grandmother opened our house for such persons to have a place to stay for the night and they would be on their way in the morning. We were not afraid during the night.

When they had the German prisoners of war quartered in the fair grounds, they exercised them and sometimes came down our sidewalk. It was so interesting to us children to think they were our enemies. They were smiled and gestured a hello. Our cat would sometimes go out to greet them. They always laughed and pet the cat.

Just one little memory I wanted to share. It was a pleasure reading this site.

I just visited your "Pearls In Our Past" website. The link was listed in Fred Langa's "LangaList" newsletter.

I want to compliment you on a job well done. The entire site shows that a lot of time and effort went into creating it. The individual topic pages, and the accompanying photos, tell a lot about the history of Hartford.

I was born and raised in Benton Harbor, Michigan, but have been gone from there a long time now.

Many members of my mother's side of the family lived in the area around there, also. I remember well the small communities of Coloma, Watervliet, Hartford, Lawrence, Paw Paw, and others. And, I have to admit, I miss southwestern Michigan!

Do you ever attend the Blossom Parade in Benton Harbor/Saint Joseph? It was a big parade when I was living there. I hope it has continued since then.

I remember one of my uncles going to an "Ox Roast" up in your area. He wouldn't miss it!

But, I don't remember which town it was in.

I've placed your site in my Favorites folder so I can revisit from time-to-time.

Emma; I have to say that I was pleasantly impressed by this sight. I have shown it to my children so that they may learn about my HOMETOWN. Growing up in Hartford I felt like a part of a Huge Family. You have done and are doing such an awesome job with the Hartford website. I was really thrilled to see it. I have many wonderful memories of all my classmates and fond memories of Hartford and all the great people there, Hartford High School, the band, Mr. Achterberg - the band director, playing the organ for many of the Hartford Queen contests, the Diary Bar and the Pitchers - I could go on and on. I had to leave Hartford prior to my graduation and move to Ft. Lauderdale with my parents in Oct., 1966. It was one of the most difficult times in my life. I met my husband, Jim Davis in Ft. Lauderdale 34 years ago and didn't have to change my last name. He's the love of my life. We have 3 grown children and a granddaughter and I am extremely blessed. I continued playing the the organ professionally and still do. I also have several piano students. It would be great to hear how everyone is doing - their spouses, children and grandchildren. Wow, I can't believe we're old enough to have grandchildren!!! I am very much interested in everything and everyone in Hartford. I would really like to contact any of my former classmates.

I am attempting to piece together my family history. I have traced back my great-great-great-great-grandfather, a Mr. Eaton Branch, a early settler of Lawrence. His son, Ira Branch was the father of my great-great-grandfather who left Lawrence and never spoke to anyone in his family. I have found a very old scrapbook and numerous pictures that were his. His name was William Eaton Branch, aka Bert. I am unsure of how to piece together the bits and pieces I have of his life. Emma, what a great job!...And I have only begun. Bick told about this at the reunion. I remember when the Thomas mansion was being built. We lived in a little green shingled house on an 80 acre farm, think still owned by Obermesiks. Daddy always said it was where we were "oh, so poor, but oh, so happy!" When I was ten, we sold the farm to Thomas (he bought up a number of farms in the area), and moved to Schoolcraft; stayed there two years, then back to Hartford. I was born in my Grandpa & Grandma Dade's house, 516 E. Main, where Rice's Sporting Goods is located. Grandpa retired from his farm out in the Miles District when mother was in 8th grade. I would like to see more pictures of what Hartford looks like today. When I was nine years old I was crossing Main Street going home from school and was hit by a car. I grew up in Hartford, My mom. sister, and brother still live there. I was back in Hartford for my dads funeral. I was looking for Hartford on the net when to my surprise I found this wonderful site. I loved all of it especially the Korean war veterans. My dad was there, I really miss my family, and they don't know about this site, but now they will. I live in California, have now for 19 years. Hartford is still beautiful. I also liked your guest book. I saw a couple of names of people I went to school, I even e-mailed one. I remember Jeff Fleming from school and Rick Thomson. I really hope more people find out about this.

The pictures from the fire downtown....I was in 6th grade going home on the school bus, trying to see out the bus window, the roads were closed, and the bus was rerouted around town, but there was no way you could of missed that baby...it was like a bad dream I thought my home town was going to burn down.

I hope not to stay away so long this time, I miss my family, my mom Barbara Stair, brother Scott Stair and sister Malinda Stair (Garslen), and I really miss my dad, Roy Stair, who is with our Lord looking down on us. I will keep checking in on this great site so that I won't be so homesick. Oh, and "Hi" aunt Betty Sumners, Tina, Doug and Steve, and my nieces Dana and Sanna, nephews DJ and Skyler, and my great niece, Christon. Hope to be there soon....my home town Hartford.

Hello...my name is Kevin Stephenson. My wife and I live in Canton Illinois which is about 30-miles southwest of Peoria. My parents have both died and my sister and I are in the process of clearing out their home in Monmouth Illinois. My great grandfather was Lewis P. Walker who was a co-owner of Bergmann & Walker Inc. in Hartford. We still have three of the "B-W Easy Chairs" manufactured at his plant in the early 1900's. We also have a number of pictures of his sawmill and factory we've found at my parent's home. I'll be the first to admit I'm not completely up to speed on our family's history. I have really enjoyed every page about the Hartford Area on your site. I had always felt as if I were somewhat a part of Hartford in a way. Being from Chicago originally, we used to visit the area quite often. Visiting with my grandparents Julius & Anna Pozivilko, aunt & uncle Julius (JR.), Nell (Vanlier) Pozivilko. Uncle Nick Korsak and his wife Luanne. Cousins Carol and Chuck Jagade, Maryellen, Peter, Bill, John, Julia Pozivilko. Many friends, Jim Richter, Don Burns, Sharon Beattie, Pat Heater, Arnold Street, Betty Honea, Karlas, John and Emants Rapa and many more. Hartford has a charm all of its own. I can remember going to many dances above the old firehouse and meeting many other kids that were so friendly. They made me feel as if I were a part of the group. Even when I used to watch them pitching horse shoes outside of the fire department, the older people would come over to where I was sitting and talk to me about them living in Hartford. Do not understand the E mail thing, but "sure" I would be interested in talking with anyone that knows anything about RUSH LAKE. To put it brief: I have pics dated 1932-34. The land caddy corner belonged to my mothers parents. My Grandfather, whom I never knew. {was told a SUE INDIAN ?} Have a few pics of him, you can see the Indian in him. Dark skin, high cheek bones, the nose, and handsome. When I was a little girl, going to visit the graveyard was a special thing. My dad always told us that it was a "VERY SPIRITUAL" I do remember that many of the stones have been removed. mainly babies. John was a common name. I go back as far as when we had to park on the side of the road or walk from the other side of the lake. Just to visit and pray. I remember walking through the tall grass trying not to not step on snakes and other critters just to be alone and peaceful. {way before this place was taken care off} I still visit during the simmer. My ancestors are all from Van Buren Co. These include Webster, Washburn, DeHaven, Poorman, and Stone families. My mother was Mildred L. Webster and graduated Hartford High School in 1928. I am continuing her genealogy research She passed away in Dec. 2000. I briefly visited Hartford in June 2001 to bury her ashes at Maple Hill Cemetery and to visit other cemeteries in the area. My great grandfather, William Webster, homesteaded near Hartford in Webster Hills. I believe the old Washburn home is still lived in in Arlington Twsp. It was a great visit and I hope to return soon.

I grew up in and around Hartford worked in the migrant camps picking apples and strawberries. I really enjoyed going to the Hartford drive-in on the weekends took my first love there. My sister was ran over by a car at the stop light in the middle of town when she was small. I visit this site now and again. I love to look at it and read whatever anyone writes about. I have learned to care a lot for the historical value of a small city like Hartford. At this stage of my life, it would not be feasible for me to live there. But I cannot let go of the wonderful memories and feelings I have for this precious spot in this world. I shut my eyes and I can hear and smell the country smells. In the spring I can hear and smell the bullfrogs. I can smell and hear each change of the season. But if you haven't lived in Hartford, you would not know what I know!!

I'm glad to have found this site! I've been tracing my family tree, and had hit a brick wall. I know the early history starting in England then moving to PA. then onto OH., MI., and Ontario after that I'm missing several generations. My great grandfather lived in Hartford. I've only been there once when I was young for my great grand mothers funeral. I remember many markers with my family name in the cemetery. I wasn't sure if Hartford was the right town until I searched the school database and found his name!! So now I just have to find out which cemetery (and where) to finally fill in some gaps! My name is John Rittenhouse. My Great Grandfather, James B. Rittenhouse was one of the pioneers of Hartford in the 1850's. My family lived there for three generations (my father David Rittenhouse) was born there. My Grandmother was a descendant of the "little preacher", the Rev. Eastman.

I worked at the Dari-Snack across from the high school in the late 70's, also Green Acres (USED TO BE STEWARTS DRIVE IN AND MINIATURE GOLF) also the old Dog-n-Suds before that. Comments: I happened to come upon your website that included a picture of "The Crystal Palace". I remember spending a week at Storick's Resort on Little Paw Paw Lake with my folks in the 40's.   In late afternoon we'd walk from our cottage up to Ed's Café for their chicken and chicken liver dinner's that they were well known for. I was probably 5 or 6 years old, if I was lucky, I'd be given money to put in their juke box. Then after dinner we'd walk up to Ellinee for some groceries and to visit their game room with the fortune teller machine, the Hollywood Star Cards machine, and various other game machines including pinball machines.   Oh, and I'd get a single dip "Blue Moon" ice cream cone to eat while walking back to the cottage.
        On that walk back down the country gravel roads, we'd sometimes be a little late and it would be starting to get dark. My Dad would produce a small flashlight that he'd shine on the road ahead, so that we'd see the road and that the few cars that would pass us would see us!   I remember how the bugs started to get pesty near sundown. And if it was late enough, how we could hear the music coming from The Crystal Palace was we continued to walk along the roads past other cottages and the farmfield that was in back of Crystal Palace, back to our cottage of Little Paw Paw Lake.
         It was such fun being somewhere where so many people were enjoying "being on vacation!" Our family vacationed at Paw Paw Lake from the early 1900's (my Father's family) to my husbands and my honeymoon, we took our kids and then our grandchildren as recently as 1998. Last time we stayed at Schicks and visited Deer Forest, of course! So your area has some fond memories for us. It was interesting to read the entries, and such a great idea for your community.  I'll be a continuing reader of your site!

During the mid 60's our family would migrate to Michigan, usually for 3 to 4 months. We lived and on a camp owned by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Erwin. This site was on the corner of Territorial Rd. & 58th Rd. I have so many good and treasurable memories. Thanks to your web-site, now I know how this enormous (aleman) German man got to Michigan. I was really impressed with all the newspaper clippings. Every weekend we would work hard, so we could earn that dollar to go the the movies. I don't recall the name of the movies nor the drug store where we used to get our hamburger and ice-cream, but it was right next to the movie theater. Momma would do the grocery shopping at Spartan behind the beautiful white church on main street. Once, our trucker leader took us to Dowagiac, but we didn't like it. So, it was back to Hartford again. My best memory is when I earned my first $5.00 and got my first pair of Beatle boots. Talking about being hip, I was it. On Sundays we would pass our time running all the way down to Keeler Lake and meeting new people from other camps. Hope someone would throw a lite bulb party and listen to the latest 45's. They were mostly from the lower Rio Grande Valley in south Texas.

My Dad taught us discipline. He taught us how to work and work hard. He would always tell us; if you don't taste the salt of your sweat daily you have not had a good working day. My wife of 33 years was also a migrant worker. They traveled Florida, Carolinas, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and back to Texas to the cotton gins. Last trip she took was in 1971 where they went to Sandusky, Ohio picking tomato and working in some cannery plant. I practiced architecture for 19 years and then I had to shift gears during the Reaganomics era. That really put a dent in Texas, it even made it smaller. My wife is a librarian and for her summer job she volunteers on the migrant programs assisting the folks from Mexico and South American countries.

Some of our friends stayed around the Michigan area in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Detroit and even Chicago. As for my family of (14) we all stayed together and still live close by each other. Only my Dad is resting, as he passed away in 2003. One of this days, I am going to make that trip and go visit this nice little town. Thanks and Adios, Manuel Monreal. I remember the long bus ride to Hartford from Hagar Township by Lake MI. and what great classmates I was fortune enough to have at Hartford. I still have my little cedar chest that we got in our Senior year from Conklin's Furniture Store. And after graduation I use to return to Hartford to buy the cutest dresses you could find anywhere at this little shop on the South side of the street, can't remember the name of the shop. The Tastee Freeze, which is now Molly's Turnaround, was a favorite place for us to have our school bus driver, Rudy, stop on the way home for a cool treat. As long as I had to attend a different school other than Watervliet High I am glad it was Hartford. I do believe I have become cross-eyed from looking through your site for so long, but I will return for sure!

Comments: My ancestors helped settle Hartford in 1843. I was proud of Hartford Village and Hartford High School. The town was clean and the homes were pretty. There were no cars parked in the yards or trash all over the lawns and streets. Hartford was a place to be proud of. I can not say that now. Hartford City is one big MESS. I hope before I leave this world that I will see the people of Hartford once again take pride in their town. I hope that it not to late, but I won't bet on it. What happened to the good old Hartford spirit. Remember the 50 and 60's. Clean up the town, fix up those old beautiful homes that were once there. Comments: I am looking forward to keeping up with the Hartford website. Thanks so much for all you do in keeping it up. I did attend the Federated Church for a while...probably around 1970-71. Jim and Norma Leonard, good friends of my mother and members of the church, invited me to a Billy Graham Crusade in Chicago, and it was there that I gave my life to Christ. I grew in the Lord for a couple of years, but then backslid. At the age of 19, I moved from Michigan to North Carolina, and began attending a church in Asheville. It was there I re-dedicated my life to Christ and felt led into the ministry. I was minister of music at four different churches in North Carolina for 17 years before God called me into missions...my wife was called when she was 12...she was just waiting patiently for me! She was raised on the mission field...her parents were missionaries in Vietnam during the war. We have been married for just over 20 years.

My mom's name is Judy...her maiden name is Burnette (HHS 1958). My grandparents were Bill and Edna Burnette of Keeler. My dad is Don Winans, who now lives in Alabama. They divorced when I was 4 years old. We lived in Hartford...just down the road from George and Nancy Huffman on 66th street. My mom now lives in Fairview, NC, which is just outside of Asheville and has been married to her current husband for almost 30 years now. Larry and Gloria Helmer (HHS 1958) Winans are my aunt and uncle.

My family and I currently live in Sapporo, Japan. We have two daughters and a son ages 10-18. We are missionaries, and have been in Sapporo for almost two years. Before that we were in Tokyo for over two years doing full-time language study. Now, we are part-time language students, part-time missionaries. We will be coming back to the states next year, probably around June, for a year of stateside assignment. During that time, we will probably make a trip or two to Michigan to see relatives there. After a year in the states, we plan on returning to Sapporo, but we never know what God has in store for us, so we will keep looking to Him for direction. I look forward to keeping up with the website and seeing if I can catch up with any high school friends, as well as town friends. I have lost contact with so many. The website is such a good idea, and I am so grateful to you and your work, Emma. I look forward to keeping in touch with you, and with the happenings of Hartford.

Hartford was a busy town in the late 60's. I worked at Hartford Du-Well and went to the local bars for lunch and cash my checks. We were Chicago people. We had a cottage on Lake Van Auken. It was a great life for a kid, summer at the lake- winter in Chicago. When I was 10yrs old, my parents, Lawrence and Effie, moved to the lake. I went from big city school to the one room Van Auken School. The big shock to my teen life was when my parents sold the cottage and bought a strawberry farm 1 mile east of Hartford along Red Arrow Highway. A few years later my dad built the Elbow Bend Go Kart Track. That was lots of fun. The family farm was sold to the company that built the big cold storage buildings that are now where the go kart track was. I moved to CA. My father, Robert E. Shafer was born in Hartford, Michigan in 1923, and left for military duty around 1940. He went on to marry Elizabeth Donnelly from Logan, West Virginia, and together they had six children. From approximately 1967 to 1977, my father would drive our entire family up from our permanent residence in Lakeland, Florida, to spend the summer working on my Uncle Steve Shafer's farm outside of Hartford and Bangor. I will forever cherish my childhood memories of long summer days on the farm and visits with my Shafer relatives, particularly my grandparents, Dell and Ruth Shafer. Robert Shafer now lives in Tallahassee, Florida. My mother, Elizabeth, passed away on March 2, 2005. Robert's children live in Jacksonville, Tampa and Tallahassee, Florida, as well as Janesville, Wisconsin. This is a lovely site and an obvious labor of love. The Genereaux family has been in Hartford for many many years. My grandmother, Betty J. Genereaux was born and raised in Hartford along with her 2 sisters and one brother. My grandmother passed in 2001 leaving behind many memories that our family holds dear. To this day, the Genereaux family still remains in the area. Myself, I just moved here to Hartford April 1st 2006 and look forward to meeting and getting to know my family here. You can find me at the corner of S. I feel there should be more information on those that served in our armed forces during the cold war era, I served in the U.S. Army and patrolled the East German and Czechoslovakian boarders, and spent two years in Europe fighting the communist threat. Where do you get the information and pictures from to update that section?

Information on military personnel from Hartford-Keeler comes from various sources...from those who served themselves, mailed or emailed from family members, and hours of scouring old newspapers (if I have any old ones), etc. Sometime, this information is very hard to come by and is only received through persistence of friends or relatives who know about one's military service and the website tribute. Anyone who served in the military, and lived in Hartford or Keeler at any time during their lifetime, is eligible to be on our History of Hartford military section. Length of service time and/or wounded-died is not the most important criteria for the website (although definately want to know about these things) ... the fact that one entered service and lived in Hartford or Keeler are most important. I'd love to get profiles and pictures for military mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc....just as long as they have lived in Hartford-Keeler at anytime, Revolutionary War to present day. Thanks, Emma, for keeping this site vital and alive. You are the closest we have to a Hartford historian. I must also mention that Bick Beckwith puts out HHS news on a Hartford network. Larry & Lois Blyly have most complete computer records on HHS people. Also important sources of email history are Bud Colman, Ray Sreboth, and Stu Elder. Stu has a photo file of many HHS students from the 30s & 40s. We are all trying to keep Hartford alive in our memories..... This is our home town, and living here was both unique......and yet part of universal small town life that has suffered many changes in the past few years. My parents and my moms parents had property on Rush Lake. Those are my most prized memories. The solitude away from the city of South Bend, small friendly town of Hartford. Miss the country smell of the cows and the sound of the roosters, bullfrogs and crickets. Still wonder if the Rush Lake monster is still alive.

I loved growing up in Hartford and when I got divorced, I moved back home to Hartford and raised my children and they graduated from Hartford also. I have fond memories of Hartford. I loved being raised in a small town. As a young girl I visited the Library often. It was in an old big brick house. I often think about my friendships of the past, and wonder how certain people are doing. I married John Anthony in 1968. We had two children. In 1976 I moved to Holland Michigan. I was married 18 years to Tom Dykstra. In 1994 we divorced, and in 1996 I married Steven Immink. We live in Greenfield, Indiana now. It is just East of Indianapolis. Steve works for Eli Lilly. We adopted my Grandson, Tomas in 1993. He will be 13 this Summer. My son (from John Anthony) is now nearly 38, and My daughter (from John Anthony) is 35. I am blessed with 5 beautiful Grandchildren. John lives in Indiana and his two daughters are Olivia, almost 16, and Elizabeth 14. Rebekah has 3 children...Tomas (who we adopted), Alex 9, and Daisy 5. They reside in Holland Michigan. We attend a great Church called Brandywine Community Church. Our three services are overflowing, so we are building a bigger facility. Over the past 20 years I have hosted 7 Foreign exchange students. Thus began my love for Europe. I just returned (April 2006) from my 8th trip over there. I have 4 cats and a wonderful Dog. My class was 1971, however, Because I got pregnant in the 10th grade I had to finish my education through night school....Therefore, I actually graduated in 1971 from Paw Paw High school. I recently visited Hartford to locate the gravesite of my great-great-great grandfather Orson Olds. Since assisting my mother with genealogical research (mostly microfilm reading of newspapers) I have been intrigued with the connection to Hartford. Too bad the Hartford (Olds Hotel) House burned. My great grandfather Millard D. Olds was born in Hartford, but moved north to Cheboygan. Had the opportunity to return home during the week of July 4th. Was only able to take a quick spin thru Watervliet-Hartford-Keeler but, as always, it brought back lots of memories. My folks' former farm looks like it's being taken care of (Thank You to the current residents!), Visited the Keeler cemetery and found it to be in dire need of a good mow & trim job. Will have to make my short visit last until next year. Been in PA for 21 years now, but "home" is still "home".

Former resident, present-past family members, attended Hartford High School and would have graduated with class of 1978. Father was a fire fighter, along with two uncles, who served on Hartford Fire Dept. I was raised in Hartford from birth thru my mid 20's when I moved to TN Traveled back and forth for the remainder of my life and still due to visit family still living in Hartford. My mother is Mary Lou Shirley. She was married to Trues (Junior) Shirley, Jr. They owned a house in Hartford, and I lived with them off and on and attended Hartford High School with, I suppose, is the graduating class of 1968. I think I have half-brothers and a half-sister living in Hartford still.

I am looking for more about the Mildred Smith you have in the telephone office photo. Two of the girls in my class (1954) worked at the Howell telephone office, with the same type of equipment. That photo brought back a lot of memories for me. Mildred Smith had a younger sister, Virginia Caroline Smith, who was born in Hartford about 1921 and was in school around 1935. I have been looking for Virginia C. Smith and found her and her sister Mildred. If you want to use the obituaries I found, it may help other people searching for this family. Mildred married Otto Schriner.

GOBLES - Mildred E. Schriner, 81, of Gobles, died Saturday, October 21, 1995, at the Allegan County Medical Care Facility. She was born May 24, 1914, in Chicago, the daughter of Charles H. and Elizabeth M. (Siebengartner) Smith. She was a member of St. Mary Church, Paw Paw. On September 6, 1934, in Watervliet, Mich., she was united in marriage to Otto L. Schriner, who preceded her in death on March 30, 1977. She is survived by a son, Donald C. Schriner of Ludington, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Sue) Gibbs and Mrs. Phillip (Karen) Boyer, all of Gobles; five grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Chestnut of Allegan. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary Church, Paw Paw, with the Rev. Fr. Robert Flickinger, Celebrant. Interment followed in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford.

Obituary — Jimmie A. Chestnut, Sr., 77, Allegan, Mich., died Thursday, October 28, 1993, at the Allegan Care Center. He was born May 15, 1916 in Denison, the son of Ira and Sarah Stuckert Chestnut. He farmed all his life and had served as president of the State Holstein Association and had served on the Board of Production Creamery and the Allegan County Fair Board for many years. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; three sons, Charles, Williamston, Mich.; Jimmie, Jr., and Harry, both of Allegan; a brother, Glenn, Topeka; one sister, Flora Bottom, Havensville; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Martin, Orville and Cecil. Burial was in Mallory Cemetery, Trowbridge Township.

My special memories of my days living and growing up in Hartford was the people that I got to grow up with and love. I have lots of great memories about school, my favorite teachers, friends, playing sports and being voted as the most athletic my senior year for my class. I played every sport and sometimes played 2 different sports at the same time. My favorite memory however is about my high school sweetheart who still lives in Hartford that meant the world to me and still does.

My connection with Hartford is the McCollum family who had a family farm just outside of town near Van Auken Lake. The parents were Rolland (Uncle Jack) and Mary. The children are Linda, Carol (who died in a car crash in 1965) and Jamie. In the winter of 1962 Mary McCollum worked for my mother in Chicago as a waitress to earn income for family and farm. It was arranged that I would spend the following summer on the McCollum farm, I was nine or ten. The next two or three summers on the farm were the best years of my childhood. My world changed from Chicago suburbs to farm life in Hartford. Uncle Jack grew peaches, cherries, asparagus and raised some pigs too. I got to drive the tractor, chased the pigs until Uncle Jack yelled at me "Boy I'm trying to fatten those pigs up, stop chasing them". One night Jamie and I snuck out of the house and went skinny-dipping in Van Auken Lake. Having fun at the county fairs. Anyway a piece of my heart will always remain in Hartford. I spent a few hours in Hartford last year, mostly going through the cemetery, looking for relatives and familiar names. We lived at 401 S. Center, the property looks much the same as when we were there. Mr. & Mrs. Ivan White lived across the street, we used to stop on our trips near Hartford to see Mrs. White, a truly lovely woman. I have been doing my family genealogy on the Snyder/Grove, Stanley/Root for approximately 3 years. I am stuck on the Snyders. If anyone has any information on the Frederick & Mary E. (Goss) Snyder family, PLEASE help. I found out that Frederick's parents were Adam & Margaret Snyder. Frederick was the 3rd child born on January 6th, 1837 in Liverpool, Ohio and died on August 5th 1909 in Bangor, Michigan. When I read of the past, I am sad that I have missed out on so much knowledge of my ancestors. It wasn't until my teens that my family really started to let me in on just how much (my parents were divorced). I just want to thank my aunt Linda Wesaw (Birdsall) for all the work she has done for our family tree. I know this thank you is a long time coming. Without her, I never would have known much of anything of our heritage, or of the wonderful book, LAND OF FOUR FLAGS, as where it tells of my great great grandfather, CHIEF WESAW. I am so PROUD of my Indian blood. Something no-one can ever take away for me. I love the pow wows, the new friends that I've met and everything yet that I have to learn. My skin may not be as dark. Childhood memories of Hartford frequently cross my mind. I went to Hartford Elementary and played on the basketball team with guys like Steve Hallgren and Johnny Szewczyk. I also remember a little girl named Becky Geisler. I was class president every year in elementary school before moving to Florida. I remember the police chief was Wendell Everhart (our neighbor), and remember visiting Dr. Del Stagg at his home. I also remember Mrs. Paras (Parascandolo) and her Cadillac with the fins. My friends and I would sled and play on Paras Hill. Some teachers I remember are Ms. McCoy, Ms. Sorenson, Ms. Lambert, and it was as beautiful as a child could hope for. It was so much fun going to the race track as well. Oh yes, I remember the Rose family had a drug store in town, and I won the "Most popular boy in town" contest and a new Columbia bike. The Ritz theater and roller skating were always huge fun too. We lived on Main and Elm I think which was kitty corner from the post office. God Bless the people of Hartford who were kind to me. In 1916, I was born in Hartford. My parents, Daniel and Jenny (James) Stoddard, lived on a farm my Mother's parents purchased for our family, which our land went to Shafer Lake. We fished, swam at the Shafer Lake. On the farm land there were only four houses, the Shafer's, Stickney's, Simpson's, and of course the Stoddard's (we were all related in one way or the other). I went two years to the Old School House called Shafer School. My brothers, Clair, Cleland (Slim as he was called) Raymond, Lyle, and my sister Mildred went there years before me. Most of the kids back then were my cousins at Shafer School. We went to an old church there by the school, can't (at age 90) remember the name of the church.. The old cemetery where I have a twin sister born stillborn in Nov 1916 is buried there. My grandfather, Charles Frank (Stanley) Stoddard had the movie house in Hartford, we got to go to it once a month FREE, but the catch was we had to clean it after the movie. Have so many memories, but yet at my age so few memories of Hartford. We then moved to Mishawaka In. when I was about seven or eight.

Alva C. Spaulding of Dayton followed his son and enlisted as a musician on August 22, 1862, at the age of 37 into the 26th Michigan Infantry. He served through the entire Civil War and was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 13, 1865. His grave is in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Hartford, Van Buren County Michigan.

I was in the 5th grade when Woodside Elementary was opened. I was involved in the ceremonies when we buried the time capsule at the base of the flagpole. I was one of the boyscouts. there were only two of us, I think the other boyscout was Doug Romeo but I'm not sure, it was a long time ago. I wish I could have been there when they raised the time capsule a few years ago. I read about it in the paper. Sometimes I receive the Tri-City paper from Watervliet. I don't know when my mom Cora Okeson and the rest of her family got to Hartford or how long the lived there. I think that she finished the 8th grade there. (She is in the 1914-1915 Hartford school picture on your webpage, along with Nina Okeson and Leda Dade.) My Aunt Nina contracted TB in about 1918. My mom, her brother, my Uncle Dan Okeson, and his wife, took my Aunt Nina on the sojourn to the SW for her TB to heal. They got as far as Childress TX where my Aunt Nina Okeson died. Uncle Dan Okeson was commissioned to build the new school house in Childress TX where my mom Cora Okeson would teach once it was built. It was a one room school house. My dad "Tex" (Eddie Moore) would come around on his horse and ask my mom if should would go for a ride with him. She did, they were married, and I am the youngest of their nine children. I remember my mom telling me about Hartford MI and the beautiful apple and fruit orchards. She had such fond memories of Hartford. I always loved to hear about her stories of picking strawberries and other fruit. She was a wonderful mother. Hartford must have had wonderful school teachers. My mom was so smart, even with just the 8th grade education, that she was able to teach in Childress TX as well as teaching all of her children. She never stopped reading and teaching herself.      I remember back in the middle 60's when I, and some family, moved back from Colorado. We worked on the farms. I remember picking strawberries on Fosters Farm east of town and Hilltop Orchards where I helped lay irrigation pipes and picked asparagus. I worked a lot on the farms around here - it brings back a lot of memories.
     The town of Hartford was busy and a lot of people had jobs. When I turned 18 years old, I worked at Du-well in Hartford - they painted and chrome plated knobs for washing machines, clocks and gas caps for cars. I worked in shipping for Harm Bailey.
     I remember Jim Kidd, Wanda Sinclare. I used to go to Sister Lakes to skate. I remember going skating with Scott Rice, he is deceased as of last year. He used to tend bar at the Main Tavern in Hartford. I grew up with the Rice family in Watervliet. I remember the Harmon girls used to go skating back then. Me and my family did alot of fishing around Hartford. My dad used to fish with his uncle on Merriman Lake north of Hartford back in 30's and 40's.   Its a nice place to retire, as I am now.
     My dad, Hearl Little, lived in Hartford for over 30 years. He married Shirley Brubaker and raised her kids here. My sister was married to Terry Harris, son of John and Virginia Harris from Hartford. I have alot of fond memories of the Hartford race track and Wesaws, Daiseys, Caldwells, Millicans, Dixons and the Martin boys, Mike Lothka, Loomis brothers, Sweets, Moons, Harold Bohns, the Mannings (I worked with at Bendix), Williams, and Owens families, and CoCo's family restaurant, Kickstand Bar, Joe's Bar, Betty's Rumors Bar, the City Police - the Beltran's, and Yemi the Hartford manager.

I remember the Strawberry Festival every year in Hartford as one of my favorite times of the year. We always knew Spring was here when it was time for the festival. I remember the bank on the corner always changing to a different bank and how much Harding Food Market has changed with the times over the years. When I was a kid we would go to the cemetery on the hill and slide down the slopes on our sleds! I remember going to the Dime Store on Main Street when I was a kid. There were rows of cool things to buy and the candy counter was the best! I remember that we always were watched very closely when we were in there by the owners and I was quite sad when it closed.

I've been reading and looking around on this site for a couple of hours. There's so much to see and to remember! Someone else posted a comment remembering the old dime store that used to be on Main street. That brought back SO many memories. I loved that place when I was a kid. I remember when I was 8, we'd go to the library on Saturdays and watch movies upstairs. I remember when they decided to put the trees and lights in on the sidewalks of Main Street. I was really bummed that day because I realized that the town I grew up in was changing too fast for me. Even Ely Park is different now. (Back when I was a kid, there was no roof over the cement in the back of the park.) I remember the restaurant called the Southern Inn (was on Main street located in the building that they just tore down.)....and Mr Z's chocolate covered donuts.--- The buildings have changed so much over the years, but I've gotten back a lot of memories from your site. Back in the early days when Hartford Speedway was dirt (clay), I flipped a 59 Studebaker Hawk over the no. 1 turn 7 times end over end during PRACTICE BEFORE THE RACE EVEN STARTED.... IT WAS ONE HELL OF A RIDE AND I LOST 4 TEETH AND BROKE THREE RIBS............GOD HOW LIFE WAS GRAND BACK THEN!

Worked at the Hartford Telephone Office during my Jr. and Sr. year in HHS. 1953 and 1954. Strong bonds were developed with all the operators. A bridal shower was given in my honor by the girls, as I graduated June 3,1954 and was married July 3, 1954. My father died suddenly a week after the marriage and my 5 year old sister was in a serious auto accident at the same time The girls brought a nice meal to the house for our family. I am looking for the Blanco's, maybe I'm not spelling it right. They were a very big part of my life when I was young. I am looking specifically for Janie Blanco. Her mom could cook the best food. She would make the best tamales ever! I remember, as a kid, our family from Cassopolis going over there to eat these tasty wonders straight from the kitchen. That was heaven. Will someone let me know what ever happened with this family? I think they had a son named Raymond. My mom was Elsie and dad was Earl. Our last name was Edwards. I had a friend that used to live in the Thomas mansion, her family was the caretakers for a while. Verna Brown was her name. I used to love spending the night with her and sleeping in those huge rooms with the marble fireplaces, and the marble window seats were so cool to sit in! There was a little iron stairway in her sunroom that took you up to the roof. We used to sneak up there all the time and sunbathe!! Great Times!!!

My last visit to Hartford, included a night out with friends. Memories of the past where shared. A thoughtful prayer for those who have past on. Glances of friends who have aged gracefully. The biggest shock of all was learning the Hartford House had burned. This had been a piece of history. A quick visit to the fruit stand on the out skirts of Hartford brought back memories of the numerous apple orchards and the rotten apple wars We had as children. The most memorable events of all took place at my uncle Don Tillmans in Keeler. The end of the year rotten vegetable fights. The Booney Bike trails and the good old fashioned family BBQ's

My dad, Jack R. DeMorrow, was on the fire board during our time there and used to own the the Gulf station in downtown Hartford for several years as well as the Sunoco station at the I-94 interchange. That station made the national news via The Associated Press because it was run by all girls, my sisters and step-sisters. Beverly Newland, Merry Newland, Susan DeMorrow, and Sandra DeMorrow. The photo that was taken flashed around the country as it had more leg in it then most gas station attendants did. I went into the service of the Navy 5 days after I graduated and spent 10 years with them, and while with them was attached to the Marines for 2 years. In 1981, I got out of the Navy and joined the Coast Guard where I completed my military career of 20 years, 4 months and 11 days. I have written a well received book called "The Military is Like a Cold Shower...somebody should tell you about it before you get in." about considering the military as a career. I love the entire site. I especially love all the old pictures. I knew Bill Dyer for a long time and I know how hard he worked on getting some of the old photographs and news clippings. He was a very special person and I miss him. This site must have been a lot of work and great praise for everyone who worked on it. My mother and her family were from here years ago, my mom still lives here as well as many of my relatives. My grandparents were Harold and Dorothy Shafer. I think everyone in Hartford knew my uncle Tracy Shafer ( he was wonderful.) My mother left Hartford as a young woman (16) and went to Florida, had me, went to Arkansas and married and raised a family there. She moved back to Hartford in 1972 (I think) and I started school here the 2nd. half of my sophomore year. It was hard because at that time the days of school were split. I went during the morning hours and my brothers and sister went during the afternoon hours, it was lonely. But my cousin Danny Shafer helped me get a job at Galati's ( out east of Hartford on Red Arrow). That was one of the most amazing times of my life. I met most of my school friends through working there. I remember I loved going to Bonaface's store and I truly loved the dime store, I could spend hours in there. My daughter graduated from Hartford in 1996 and now my granddaugher is in the 3rd. grade at Woodside. It is nice to have roots in a town that is great.

My name is Wes Peters. I lived in Hartford from the time I was born until the age of 10. During the Christmas break of my 5th grade year my family moved to Phoenix Arizona. During my teenage years I did go back to Michigan in the summers to visit family in Kalamazoo and Sister Lakes. I have always wondered how my life would have turned out if I would have stayed in Hartford versus a large city like Phoenix. I imagine I would have still joined the Marine Corps. A not so interesting fact is that I was born in a house in Hartford rather than a hospital. If you are heading south on I-94 and take the Hartford Exit I was born in the house to the left at the end off the off ramp. The last time I visited it was part of a fruit stand. Was nice to hear about this site. Brings memories of Hartford to mind. Lived at 433 N. Center connecting the back fence of Hartford High with corner lot to THE FIELD. Remember the year of track and field with such as Nervy Oliver and John Empson, etc. The Band times at State level concerts and marching band. The times of half-time at the football games. My friends and classmates.

To let all of you know that I have been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Bone Cancer and am on my 4th treatment. I am feeling good and believe in the healing power of God.

2/10/2009 update
The treatments are going well and I am still trusting in the Lord God. During my x-rays and tests since then, the doctors have found a swelled thyroid gland pressing against my throat. I am taking a needle culture test tomorrow, 11^th of Feb. Also, my PSA gland reading is sky high and will be taking a prostate (12 cultures) test on the 19^th of Feb. These tests will be done at the VA Hospital in Columbia, MO. To all, just keep me in your prayers that these tests show that there is no cancer, just abnormal cells. God Bless You All

Hi, it's good to see that my small hometown is doing its best to keep up with technological advances. Keep up the good work. Thanks for reposting my Grandma Margaret Mashak's obituary.

My parents (Bill Mashak and Tonda Iverson) were Hartford High class of '73 (had me that same year). My dad worked a year at Conklins Furniture when I was born, then with his older brother John at Watervliet Paper Mill for many years. Doctor Stagg was our family doctor covering 4 generations! My grandma, Charlene Hammond, was one of his early nurses. I remember so many things about my 10 years there as a child... walking to the Tastee Freeze... the steam locomotive when it visited... the weekend sound of the fastest dirt racetrack in the state... my dad's own muscle cars... visiting Boyd Estes's gas station before he migrated to a warmer south... the hobby shop with the huge slot cars and track in the basement on Main Street... the dime store... the Panel Room... strawberries, apple orchards, distinctive seasons... Easter egg hunts in the park... digging snow tunnels in the yard... attending a one-room school (Hartford SDA church school)... walking a couple/few blocks to see grandparents on both sides... drive-in movies on Red Arrow Hwy... paper mill 4th of July parties... it all makes me want to weep for what was -- and cannot be brought back. I guess in many ways, though, you're doing just that -- with this website. Thank you for that. Among my memories is the business owned by my Grandfather Guy H. Gifford for over 40 years. Kirtchen and Gifford. At one time it employed upwards of 100 town folk. He made artificial wreaths and sprays for many local businesses and place like Macy's in Chicago. Also I lived across the street from Garland's Poultry Farm. I lived in Hartford for 10+ years. I loved being there as a child. It was a town that I could leave my house in the morning and play all day with my friends and my mother never had to worry about me. Looking back now I realize how much of the larger world never really made it to Hartford. I have spent the last 12 years in Florida and I have finally found a town that has the Hartford-like quality. I will always remember the Strawberry festival and the street dances that went on while I was there. That was the highlight of the year for me as well as the Van Buren County Fair. Although I didn't graduate from Hartford High, my loyalties have always been to the Indians. I often wonder if Mr. Teske is still teaching at the High School, and Mrs. Danielson at Woodside Elementary. I sometimes wish that I could come back and raise my children there, I am just too acclimated to the tropical weather and wouldn't make it in the snow. Although my family no longer lives there, to me Hartford will always be home. Anyone trying to choose the best place to raise their children, will find home in Hartford! Hoping someone can help me in my search for my grandfather, who was born in Watervliet, 1914. His name was James O'keefe and was a full-blood Potawatomi. He married Viola Johnson, a Chippewa from Ont. Canada. This is all the info that I have on him. Am hoping that some elders in the area may remember him or be related. I am also searching for a William Henry who knew my mother, Joyce Chippewa in the late 1950's. He is also from this area, I believe, and would probably be in his late 60's, early 70's. My aunt, Mildred Crain Vorath owned a farm which I believe was located at the northeast corner of 62nd Street and 61st Avenue just north of the present interstate. My grandparents lived there and farmed during the 30's and 40s-their names were George Dixon Crain and Lillie Mae Farthing Crain and they were originally from Odin IL. As a child living in Chicago, there was no greater adventure than going to the farm to visit---despite no modern conveniences--even electricity or indoor plumbing--we all loved going there. I was amazed to see that my grandparents knew how to grow their own food and raise their own animals. They seemed to have skills and knowledge we city kids had never heard of. My grandparents were not well educated but were great bible readers so were very literate as a result. They were very religious and I cannot recall them complaining about anything or longing for some fancier life--they accepted and endured. About 1943, we moved from Chicago to a farm south of Kalamazoo and my grandparents came to live with us there--my aunt sold the Hartford farm I think at that time. Wish I knew if that spot on the maps is really the old farm site. The parcel is 80-11-023-003-30 and as I recall it was about 100 acres or so. The satellite map shows two features on the parcel which I cannot identify but may be a spring or a well? Anyone who remembers the place or my grandparents--I would appreciate an email. I loved my time in Hartford and wish we came back more often. I remember times when we would 'race' our bikes around the heavy equipment company that used to be across the street from the IGA. Or at the Hartford Motor Speedway, watching the races, and once we went onto the track and realized how steep the banks were in the turns. Also the A&W root beer at the A&W Restaurant. My mother Joyce Shaul (Adams) (Owens) was raised in this area, she was born in Keeler. She passed away Nov. 8, 2008, she was 90 years old, at nursing home here in Sun City Center, Fl. She was close to me - went and picked her up almost every day to spend time with me at my home. Lester Shaul my uncle lived on Shafer Lake. Shafer Lake was named after my great grandfather, I was told. Emmette Shaul, my uncle, lived on Dewey Lake. Dewey Lake in Dowagiac was name after my great grandmother.

Comments: My grandparents, Frank and Marie Kriz, owned a home on Shafer Lake. It was sold in 1955. I have a lot of memories of Hartford. It was a nice house as it was photographed and used as a postcard.

Comments: Michigan was fun when I was younger, but Florida is nicer now that I am older. Besides, so many of my good friends are also in Florida. If you stay in Michigan, enjoy the snow. Hartford Connection: Was raised in Hartford with my three brothers, David, Marty & Tim, and my sister, Debbie. We lived at 439 E. Linden St. but our house burned after it was sold and the lot is now owned by Vere Shindeldecker. I left Hartford after marrying, had two children and lived in Caledonia, MI for 17 yrs, then in Muncie, IN for 16 yrs. where my husband, Mike, and I owned two restaurants. After selling both businesses, we moved back to Michigan in Sept. of 2008.

Comments: Growing up in Hartford was fun because the the school system was small and we got to know everyone. The class of 1968 was a very close-knit group and still is one of the only classes that reunites every five years.
    Those of us who were downtown when the businesses on the south side of Main St. burned, remember going into the smoke-filled hardware store to help carry things out. Eventually, we were stopped because the smoke was so thick. I think we all felt that we were doing our part to save whatever we could. Little did we know that the fire would change everything from then on. Rose's Drug Store and our soda shop were gone.
     Little by little, stores went out of business leaving downtown Hartford a shadow of its former self. I think there are a lot of possibilities for reviving the business district, but it will take the dedication of the current residents to make it happen. Comments: The older I get, the more I appreciate growing up in Hartford, a truly small town. The town where I live now is considered a 'small town', but it is 10 times the size of Hartford. People nowadays just don't know what they are missing. And I love this website. Found a few recollections from old friends, and even one from my brother! I miss Michigan in October, especially the leaves. Wouldn't want to fight the winter weather any more, though. The Gulf Coast has me spoiled in that sense. I will definitely keep tabs on the website. In fact, it is my intention to scan the 1972 yearbook and submit it to the site.

Comments: Two things that standout from growing up in Hartford are all of the community gathering at Ely Park for holidays and the parades we were in as Girl Scouts.
