for

Lisa Stinton Tavolacci

Lisa grew up in Hartford (HHS 1992 Honors graduate) and currently resides in Coloma with her husband, Dan and 3 children, Addison 3, Isaac 5, and Caleb 15 years old.  In 2012, Lisa was diagnosed with stage 4 T-Cell Lymphoma.  She underwent extensive chemotherapy treatments and a stem cell transplant in January 2013. She was in remission until the winter of 2014 when her cancer had returned and is in stage 4 again.  In March, Lisa and Dan traveled to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York where they reviewed Lisa's condition and agreed with the treatment set forth by the University of Chicago.
Currently at the University of Chicago for over 3 months, Lisa has
received two bone marrow transplants.  Dan has been by her side the
whole time.  Lisa has been suffering with severe effects of the adenovirus.
The doctors are working very hard to keep her comfortable throughout this process. They are continuing to monitor her counts in hops that the transplant will be a success.
Lisa still has a long road to recovery in front of her.  She and Dan appreciate all the generous people who have helped their family during this difficult time.

Girls on the Run® is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.  Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.  Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible, and teaching girls that they can.

Dockter gets medal for saving four

HARTFORD - Pfc. Frank Dockter, Jr., an army medic in Viet Nam, has been decorated for heroism for helping to save four soldiers from a flaming helicopter. He is the son of Mary Dockter. His wife, the former Sharon Kelly, lives at Watervliet.
Pfc. Dockter was awarded the army commendation medal for his life-saving action. The citation is from his commanding officer which accompanied the medal read:

"Pfc. Dockter was loading equipment on resupply helicopters which were operating in support of combat operations against a hostile force.
"At 1715 hours a helicopter on a resupply mission crashed on the north end of the 25th infantry division's airstrip, turned over on its side and burst into flames.
"There was imminent danger of an explosion.
"With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he ran to the helicopter to assist in the evacuation of the pilot, co-pilot, crew chief and door gunner, helping to free the injured personnel from the burning aircraft.
"The fact that some survived the crash is a credit to his instantaneous reactions.
"This outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th infantry division and the United States army."

Pfc. Dockter was drafted last Oct. 4 and received basic training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Tex. He has been in Viet Name since April 28. The action for which he was awarded the medal took place on May 19.  In a letter to his mother, Pfc. Dockter said he was told a day in advance that he was to receive a medal, but that he didn't know what it was for until it was presented to him.

Friday
Van Buren Co. Historical Museum

presents
Civil War Ties to Van Buren County

5:00 p.m - Salad, sandwich supper
6:30 p.m. - Presentation by Steve Rigoni

Rigoni is a Paw Paw-area grape farmer and a full-time teacher for Countryside Academy in Benton Township. He teaches agriculture and serves as a Future Farmers of America advisor. He serves on the Paw Paw District Library Board of Directors and the Van Buren Historical Society Board.

Rigoni has been a Civil War aficionado since he was in junior high school, largely inspired by a photograph purporting to show a dead Confederate sharpshooter. The photo proved to be staged, but Rigoni was hooked.

He has been a Civil War re-enactor and he collects artifacts.  A key acquisition was a box of letters offered at auction in Decatur.  They were from Capt. James H. Wheaton of Chelsea, who served in the 1st Michigan Infantry. His story, including his Decatur connection, will be presented at the session.
